Everything You Need To Know About Biodegradable Label Materials

Posted on: April 19th, 2021 by Zoe

Sustainability is becoming a priority for many consumers. Customers now look at how businesses and manufacturers are reducing their impact on the planet and are choosing to invest in companies that have green practices in place.

When it comes to your product labels, there are many ways you can make your packaging and labelling more environmentally friendly. Using biodegradable label materials in your labelling machines is an easy and efficient way of improving your sustainability. Advanced labelling systems have the ability to produce biodegradable labels as long as you are using suitable materials. In this mini-guide, we are sharing everything you need to know about biodegradable label materials.

What Are Biodegradable Labels?
Biodegradable labels will be broken down naturally over time. Most materials will break down with time, but some will leave residue of micro-plastics or emit harmful gasses in the process. When we talk about biodegradable labels, we are referring to materials that don’t leave any trace once broken down, and therefore are not harmful to the environment. Some people believe biodegradable labels are made from plant-based materials or sustainable sources, but this doesn’t have to be the case. When choosing labels for your labelling machine, you will usually be able to find biodegradable options for matt and gloss paper, as well as white and transparent film.

Using Biodegradable Inks In Labelling Machines
Having biodegradable labels is a great start, but if you print on them with inks that aren’t sustainable, then you will undo all your hard work. Some inks, such as hydrocarbon-based inks, can be hazardous to both the environment and the people using them. These inks are sometimes used in labelling machinery, and they release poisonous compounds called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air when they are drying. Biodegradable inks, such as water-based or vegetable-based inks, are far safer and also biodegradable. Always make sure you are choosing these ink types for your advanced labelling systems.

It is not just the inks in your labelling machine that you need to consider, but the coatings and finishings you are choosing for your product labels. Coatings, plastics, and petroleum-based dyes are all commonly used on labels, and they make paper difficult to biodegrade. Polymer printing films are a popular choice for those looking for more sustainable packaging options.

Biodegradable Packaging Labels
Biodegradable labels are only worthwhile if you are going to use them on a product that is also biodegradable. Using these types of labels on a glass jar or bottle is going to be a waste of time and money. Cardboard packaging is the most popular option for those using biodegradable labels because it can also break down naturally over time and be appropriately recycled. It is crucial to bear in mind that biodegradable materials shouldn’t be dumped in landfill, as when they are buried, they will not have access to the oxygen and microorganisms needed to break down. Biodegradable labels and packaging should always be recycled appropriately.

5 Key Types Of Labelling Machines For Your Products

Posted on: April 12th, 2021 by Zoe

Whether you are operating a small, local business or you run a large corporation, choosing the right labelling machinery for your products is crucial.

Hand applying labels works well for small product batches, but if your production line is expanding, then an advanced labelling system might be better suited to your requirements. Choosing labelling machines is all down to your products, packaging and production volumes, so it vital you pick the right equipment for your needs. Here are the five key types of labelling machines to help you narrow down your search:

Handheld Label Applicators
Handheld label machines are also referred to as label dispensers, and they are the most basic options available. They can accommodate various label sizes and are very useful for labelling square products such as boxes. Because they have to be manually operated, these labelling machines are only suitable for small batches. If you have an extensive product run, then a handheld label applicator isn’t going to be the best option for you.

Manual Label Applicators
A step up from handheld label machinery are manual label applicators. These machines are still operated manually but are much quicker and easier to use for large batches. They come in various types and require minimal training or set up time. Manual label machines are available for labelling various products, including bottles, boxes and more.

Semi-Automatic Labelling Machines
Semi-automatic labelling machines are activated using a hand or foot switch and are the next option after manual labelling machinery. These machines can dramatically speed up the labelling process and help your packaging team to keep up with increasing production outputs. Semi-automatic labelling machinery is compact and easy to use. They are available in various types to suit different product shapes and quantities. You can choose from front and back labelling, wrapround labelling, multisided labelling and more.

Fully Automatic Labelling Machinery
If high volume output is what you need, then fully automatic labelling machinery is the right option for you. These advanced labelling systems are an investment for your business, but whether you are facing rapid expansion or need to replace an old labelling machine, they are sure to improve your production line. Fully automatic labelling machines can operate without user assistance and offer improved consistency and fast production times. These machines are available in a range of types, suited for various product shapes and sizes.

Rotary Advanced Labelling Systems
These advanced labelling systems are designed for high speed and 24/7 production lines. Rotary labelling machines are large and often expensive options but are excellent at keeping up with high velocities. If you need your labelling machine to fit perfectly in your operational plant, these machines are highly customisable so that they can be produced for your unique business. Running at a speed of over 500 units a minute, these labelling machines are perfect for large organisations creating many products quickly.

4 Tips For Perfectly Applying Labels Every Time

Posted on: April 6th, 2021 by Zoe

Creating an engaging and well-designed label for your product is critical for success but applying that label to your product is just as important.

Labels that are not applied correctly can leave your product looking poor quality and can have a detrimental impact on sales. Most manufacturers will either be applying labels by hand or using labelling machinery; whichever option you choose, it is vital to get it right. As labelling machine specialists, we know a thing or two about applying labels. We are sharing our top four tips for perfect label application every single time.

Prepare Your Surface
You should already know exactly where you want your label to sit on your product. This should have been decided before your labels were designed and produced so that you can create the best labels for the desired position. A flat surface is always better for label application because it allows the adhesive to properly stick without bubbles, bumps or crevices. Before you get started with sticking your labels, you need to prepare the surface of your products. Make sure the area is completely clean and free from dirt or grime. For new products coming straight off the production line, this shouldn’t be an issue. Not only does the surface need to be clean, but it should be completely free of moisture.

Ensure Your Labels Are Room Temperature
Many people are not aware that the temperature of labels plays a big part in how well they stick. The majority of labels and labelling machines are designed to work best at room temperature, and if they are too hot or too cold, it can cause problems with the adhesive. If you store your labels in a cold place, make sure they reach room temperature before trying to apply them or use them in your labelling machinery. If you are working with high or low temperatures regularly, then consider specialised labels.

Position Your Label Carefully
This tip is only really relevant if you are applying labels by hand or with a handheld label dispenser. Labelling machines will take care of the label position for you, so there is nothing to worry about. If you are applying labels by hand, then be sure to properly align them before sticking down. On surfaces that are not flat, this can be tricky to achieve and can take some practice to get right.

Give Labels Time To Cure
The adhesive on some labels is not instant and needs time to set properly. This can be useful if you position your label incorrectly the first time, as you may be able to adjust it before it has cured. Label adhesive should be left for 72 hours after application to make sure that the label has bonded to the surface properly. Moving your products too soon after labelling could result in labels becoming unstuck, skewed or damaged.
