4 Tips for Bubble-Free Label Application

When it comes to labelling products or packaging, having the right application method critical. However, one of the biggest challenges many businesses face when it comes to product labels is applying them without getting bubbles. Bubbles not only look unprofessional but can also make the label difficult to read.

There are many reasons why bumps and bubbles appear on product labels, and in order to combat this problem, it’s important to understand what is causing them. Trapped air under the label surface is a common issue when applying labels by hand, but is less of a problem with a label applicator in place. If you are trying to apply labels to a soft material, such as a film or lightweight plastic container, then it can be more challenging to avoid air entrapment as the material gives way under the pressure.

Here are 4 tips from our labelling machine experts for applying clear labels without bubbles:

Clean The Surface Thoroughly

Before applying the label, make sure the surface of product packaging is clean and dry. Any dirt, dust or moisture can create bubbles between the label and the surface and look unprofessional. Use a clean cloth and a mild cleaning solution to wipe the surface and remove any debris before manual labelling or using labelling equipment.

Use a Hinge Method For Manual Application

The hinge method involves applying the label in two steps. First, place the label on the surface without removing the backing paper. Use a piece of masking tape to attach one end of the label to the surface, creating a hinge. Then, lift the label and remove the backing paper while holding the label taut. Lower the label onto the surface and use a squeegee or your fingers to smooth it out from the hinge towards the other end. This method allows you to position the label accurately before sticking it down and reduces the risk of bubbles.

Apply Even Pressure

When applying the label by hand, apply even pressure across the entire surface. Use a squeegee or your fingers to smooth out the label from the centre towards the edges. Make sure to apply enough pressure to ensure the label sticks properly to the surface.

Use a Labelling Machine

If you are labelling a large number of products, using a labelling machine can help you apply the labels quickly and accurately. Labelling machinery come in different sizes and types, from print and apply machines to fully automated machines. They apply the label evenly and smoothly, reducing the risk of bubbles.

Applying product labels without forming bubbles can be a challenge, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be done easily every single time. By cleaning the surface thoroughly, using the hinge method, applying even pressure, and using a labelling machine, you can achieve a professional-looking label with no bubbles or bumps.
